Agbara refers to power, strength, or spiritual force in Yorùbá cosmology—the vital energy that animates beings, empowers deities, and enables transformation in both physical and metaphysical realms.

Cosmological Significance

In Yorùbá thought, agbara represents the dynamic force underlying all existence. It is the power wielded by Òrìṣà, channeled through ritual, and cultivated by practitioners. Agbara can manifest as physical strength, spiritual authority, medicinal potency, or the commanding presence of sacred speech and incantation.

Sources and Manifestations

Agbara flows from Olódùmarè, the Supreme Being, and is distributed through the Òrìṣà to humanity and nature. Certain herbs, sacred objects, and locations are believed to possess concentrated agbara. In Ifá practice, the acquisition and proper use of agbara is essential for effective divination, healing, and the maintenance of cosmic balance.
