Àyànmọ́

/ah-YAHN-maw/

Àyànmọ́ refers to one's destiny or fate—the life path chosen by the individual soul before birth, which shapes the fundamental trajectory of earthly existence.

The Choosing Before Birth

In Yorùbá cosmology, each soul kneels before Olódùmarè and selects its àyànmọ́ before entering the physical world. This chosen destiny encompasses one's lifespan, character, potential achievements, and challenges. Unlike arbitrary fate, àyànmọ́ represents a conscious selection, though the memory of this choice is veiled upon birth.

Relationship to Orí and Ifá

Àyànmọ́ is intimately connected to Orí, the personal divine consciousness that carries the imprint of one's chosen destiny. Through Ifá divination, individuals can gain insight into their àyànmọ́ and understand how to align their actions with their predetermined path. While the broad strokes of destiny are fixed, wisdom and proper conduct can optimize how one's àyànmọ́ unfolds.

Destiny and Free Will

The concept of àyànmọ́ does not negate personal agency. Rather, it establishes the parameters within which free will operates. One may fulfill their destiny with grace or struggle against it fruitlessly; the wise person seeks to understand and work harmoniously with their àyànmọ́ rather than resist it.
