Ẹlà

Ẹlà is regarded as one of the earliest divine emissaries sent to earth by Olódùmarè, the Supreme Being, to establish order and righteousness among humanity. He is closely associated with the concept of ìwà (character) and is sometimes considered the spiritual father of Ọ̀rúnmìlà. His mission centered on teaching humanity moral principles before physical remedies, emphasizing that ethical conduct precedes ritual efficacy.

In many oral traditions, Ẹlà is described as the original bearer of divine wisdom who later transmitted sacred knowledge to Ọ̀rúnmìlà. Some lineages identify Ẹlà directly with Ọ̀rúnmìlà in his most spiritually pure aspect, while others maintain them as distinct but intimately connected beings. This relationship underscores the continuity between primordial purity and the ongoing practice of Ifá divination.

Ẹlà is invoked in certain ceremonial contexts as a purifying force and as a witness to oaths and sacred covenants. His presence signifies the restoration of harmony between the spiritual and material worlds. Devotees may call upon Ẹlà when seeking to cleanse spaces, individuals, or situations of spiritual contamination.
