Definition
Ìyẹ̀rosùn is the sacred yellow powder derived from the iròsùn tree (Baphia nitida), used by Babaláwo to mark the odù signatures upon the divination tray during Ifá consultation.
Source and Preparation
The powder is obtained from the camwood tree, specifically from the dried and ground heartwood or sometimes from termite-processed wood dust found at the base of these trees. Its distinctive pale yellow color carries spiritual significance, representing the luminous interface between the visible and invisible worlds. The powder must be gathered and prepared with appropriate prayers and protocols to maintain its sacred efficacy.
Function in Divination
During Ifá consultation, the Babaláwo spreads ìyẹ̀rosùn across the surface of the ọpọ́n Ifá (divination tray) and marks the binary signatures of the odù that appear through the casting of ikin or ọ̀pẹ̀lẹ̀. These marks serve as a sacred script, recording the messages from Ọ̀rúnmìlà. The powder transforms the tray into a living document of divine communication, erased and rewritten with each new casting.
Symbolic Dimensions
Ìyẹ̀rosùn embodies the concept of àṣẹ made visible—the powder receives and holds the imprint of spiritual truth. Its ephemeral nature, easily disturbed by breath or touch, reminds practitioners of the delicate and precious nature of revealed wisdom. Some traditions associate its color with Ọ̀rúnmìlà himself and the clarity of prophetic vision.
