Definition
The spiritual realm or heaven in Yorùbá cosmology, understood as the invisible dimension of existence where the Òrìṣà, ancestors, and unborn souls reside, existing in dynamic relationship with Ayé (the physical world).
Cosmological Structure
Ọ̀run represents one half of the fundamental duality in Yorùbá metaphysics, complementing Ayé, the visible earthly realm. Rather than a distant paradise, Ọ̀run is understood as an interpenetrating dimension that constantly interacts with the physical world. This realm contains multiple levels or regions, including spaces designated for different categories of spiritual beings and the souls awaiting reincarnation.
Inhabitants of Ọ̀run
The Òrìṣà dwell in Ọ̀run, as do the Egúngún (ancestral spirits) and the ara ọ̀run (heavenly beings). Olódùmarè, the Supreme Being, presides over this realm. Souls transition to Ọ̀run after death, where they may eventually return to Ayé through reincarnation, particularly within their lineage.
Communication Between Realms
Ifá divination serves as the primary means of receiving guidance from Ọ̀run. Through ritual, sacrifice, and the interpretation of Odù, practitioners maintain the essential flow of àṣẹ between the visible and invisible worlds. This communication ensures balance and allows human beings to align their lives with cosmic order.
